''Il trionfo della morte'' (''Triumph of Death'') is a novel by Gabriele d'Annunzio. It belongs to the cycle "The novels of the Rose". == Plot ==
The story is set in the Abruzzo region, the birthplace of the poet. The noble Giorgio Aurispa leaves from Rome, after witnessing a suicide. In fact Giorgio receives a telegram from his mother, who lives in the small mountain village of Guardiagrele. Giorgio arrives in the beautiful city of stone, and is fascinated by the sculptures, however, is terrified by the popular beliefs: as fear of witches. Giorgio discovers that his father has squandered the family fortune, forcing everyone to live as poor, while he has fun with a prostitute. Giorgio curses his father, and runs into the sea, in San Vito Chietino, buying a house on a hill. The beautiful Ippolita, girlfriend of George, he reaches the sea, and splits with him the beautiful fishing ''trabocchi''. Giorgio, however, is terrified by the presence of death, and he confirms his fear when he goes on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Casalbordino. Giorgio and Ippolita contemplate a multitude of desperate patients who ask the grace of the statue of the Madonna, and run away scared. While Giorgio says he wants to run away from Abruzzo, Ippolita seems very amused and fascinated by the mysteries of the strange new land. In fact she's in Rome. Giorgio is furious, and plans his suicide, killing before Ippolita.
